Spoliers? Well I suppose so, the early morning replay has already been on, but there is an afternoon one as well.
Well this wasn't nearly as exciting as France/Argentina. And I am less convinced than the rest of the media. This morning's headlines are rather flattering of a performance where we had the same amount of handling errors as Italy.
New Zealand 76 (Doug Howlett 3, Richie McCaw 2, Sitiveni Sivivatu 2, Jerry Collins 2, Mils Muliaina, Chris Jack tries; Daniel Carter pen, 7 con, Luke McAlister 2 con).
Italy 14 (Marko Stanojevic, Mirco Bergamasco tries; David Bortolussi con, Roland De Marigny con).
Halftime: 43-7
Man the Match: Richie McCaw
11.34pm Under the comforter with a cup of cocoa waiting for the start. The ARC doesn't seem to be working (bloody Jedi, get it together Cuz!). The All Blacks are running about in the silver and black Adidas warm-up suits with built in manzierres
11.37pm it's 42 degrees in Marseilles and Andrew Mehrtens has gone missing!
11.38pm a shot of the All Blacks confirms Rodney So'olialo has grown a moustache... and it's a handlebar! And you'll never guess who has a beard? Look out world!
11.41pm I take back every bad thing I said about the Italian Kappa uniforms, they actually look pretty bloody cool.
11.44pm Heeeeere comes the haka. Ali Williams goes a bit crazy. The Italians have gone into a huddle, fair enough, I wouldn't want to have to watch that.
11.46pm Kick off!
11.46.21pm Lineout! Is this how all rugby games start?
11.47pm Try! (Richie McCaw) Biggest understatement goes to Grant Fox: "that's a good start for the All Blacks"
11.49pm Hamish McKay just called Kevan Mealamu "Kevvy Mealamu, Kev the Rev"
11.51pm Picture problems are really ticking me off.
11.53pm Try! (Richie McCaw #2) Am I gonna get bored writing this?
11.54pm Andrew Mehrtens is still missing, if anyone knows his whereabouts please contact TV3.
11.57pm Penalty! (Dan Carter) Actually, that probably didn't need an exclamation mark.
11.58pm Try! (Doug Howlett). Carter will be a little annoyed that he scored out by the sideline, beacuse that will make it harder for...never mind.
12.01am Try! (Mils Muliaina) The first try to be scored on Sunday.
12.05am Try (Siteveni Sivivatu) Sorry Sivi, the exclamation points had to stop.
12.10am Andrew Mehrtans has been found safe and well. He imparts this wisdom "I was told, when your playing in Italy, if you lose 90 points to 3, make sure it's you that scores the 3 and you'll be a hero"
12.16am Try (Sivivatu) Leon MacDonald looked like he was going to score a "John Kirwan" against Italy, to Williams and then to Sivi. McKay jinxes Carter by calling the conversion through before it was kicked.
12.26am Try! (Marko Stanjevic) WTF! Oh God the tide is turned the rout is on!
12.30am It's halftime and so I'd like to point out that just before the interception I said that the All Blacks should "slow it down a bit".
12.43am We're back and one of the Italian forwards picks a fight with Carl Hayman. Hayman is sent to the bin before the Italian is killed.
12.54am Try (Chris Jack) Finally, I was getting little bored not writing "Try".
12.55am Anton Oliver, Brendan Leoard, and Isaia Toeava are brought on. Now you're f*cked Italy!
12.57am The worst pronounciation is NOT the TV3 sports team trying Italian, it is the "English" stadium announcer that can be heard in the background. "New Zealand #13, Mils Myuiliaianana"
1.00am Try (Howlett) Not bad, he actually had to fend someone off too. Pass looked a wee bit forward, but, whatever.
1.04am Try (Howlett) Congratulations to Doug Howlett, this try brings him level with Christian Cullen's record (46). Politeness almost undoes this try as both Toeava and Howlett take a "no, you" stance beofre it bounces into Howlett's hands
1.06am Italian prop Salvatore Perugini sent off for taking So'olialo out in the air.
1.08am Nemia Tialata lost a shoe! Surely the big man doesn't need shoes to play. And Aaron Mauger's on the field, when did that happen? Did he just get bored and run on?
1.11am Just incase you thought this game couldn't be any more dull, the scrums are now uncontested (while Perugini is off)
1.14am Try (Jerry Collins) The All Blacks are not allowed to score anymore tries if only to save us from endless playings of Slice of Heaven and Don't Dream It's Over.
11.15am Try! (Jerry Collins) Why the exclamation point? He gathered his own grubber kick! Jerry frickin Collins kicked it!
1.17am Footage shown of Graham Henry giving Wayne Smith a cuddle.
1.17am TRY! (Mirco Bergamasco) Well that was just dumb.
1.24am NO TRY. I have to say that that was a complete comedy. Sivivatu made the worst decision. That was an Italain try scored through All Black retardedness, but not given by the TV umpire because of a tackle without the ball (fairly poor decision in my humble opinion).
1.30am Thank god, this game is over. About 20mins of this match was exciting and it was not in the middle. The All Blacks looked good, but not really good. I'm glad we weren't plying Argentina. We passed it too often when we should've held on and taken the tackle. We played with an urgency that was not required past the 15th minute. I completely believe that the heat played a factor. Sweaty hands and tired bodies. I'm hoping for a better, more cohesive, performance against Portugal.
Tri Nations Game 2 Review: All Blacks v South Africa
noizy says: Surely the 60mins sub thing is just R&R in disguise? ...

Saturday, 08 Sep 2007 — Triple Tdid you also wonder why in the coaches had a cuddle?
it's not like it was a great win, or a great match?
maybe they're just bonding?

Sunday, 09 Sep 2007 — Sideline MikeBlimey MOTS, you're a hard task-master! That first 30mins from the All Blacks was awesome. The Italians didn't display the same fervour as the Pumas, but then again the French had nowhere near the same vision as Dan Carter and the rest of the men in black - if the French had scored once or twice early against the Pumas, would the stuffing have fallen out a little of the Argies?
Agreed, this game did get scrappier and we made a few silly little errors: that intercept and that brain spasm by McAlister with the chip kick in the his own 22 - that was Spencer-esque; I'm sure he'll be told to pull his head in a little bit. But credit to the Italians for not giving up. They aren't that bad a side.
Personally, I was just in awe of the way our forwards handled the ball like backs - for that chip and chase and try by JC, I don't think one back was involved in the movement - and yet they all still do the hard yakka.
Having said that, the scrum wasn't the best, and we didn't need to revert to a plan B or C at all (which we may have to do against the big teams), so stuff to work on. But that was our first game - I hope we can only get better! And unfortunately, I don't think Portugal will offer us much - we'll probably play most of the second-stringers in that game, so we won't gain much in the way of combination practice.

Like you, I think people are being a little too gushy about the game. It was OK, but if they make that many errors against Aussie or South Africa....

Monday, 10 Sep 2007 — drinks-after-workerYes. When the ABs weren't totally pwning Italy, they looked shoddy. Too many blown lineouts, too much aimless scampering around with the ball, too many stupid passes, too little scrum dominance, too many Carlos Spencer horror-flashbacks etc. etc. etc.
I sincerely hope that they've got it out of their system.

OMG so true. It was embarrassing. I'm in half a mind to ask Simon Grigg to send them a copy of AK 79, or something, for a bit of variety.
