I knew we shouldn't have let go of Robbie Deans

Posted by Naly D on Sunday, 05 Apr 2009.

Although I question the timing of the article [Cleveland teams doing badly? Really?] cracked.com has a story up today about '6 Insane... Curses' and although they're all mainstream, the Cubs and Socceroos ones are always good. Steve Bartman is probably my favourite baseball fan ever.

But thinking about New Zealand teams, do we have any curses? The closest opportunity we've had for a curse is Robbie Deans heading off to the Western Isles. Yet we managed to shake that hoodoo in convincing fashion.

I'd argue the Suzuki Pulse are cursed from the very beginning, after losing every match of their first season and not looking like improving this season. Not surprising if you look at the form of their predecessors, the Capital Shakers. Heres a hint: There were only eight teams in the National Bank Cup.

Or could we call the Hurricanes cursed? Despite an All Black producing history [Cullen, Lomu, Umaga, Nonu, Bull, Tiatia etc] we're yet to win the Super 12/14. Worse than that, of 12 seasons we've made the top 4 5 times. We've only made the final once, and that was more like a scene from Pirates of the Carribean. Four of the five times we've made the playoffs we've been knocked out by the Crusaders [the fifth was the Brumbies]. Oh, and there was the fact Wellington won the 2000 NPC and finished 9th in the 2001 Super 12.

Or how about the fact the Wellington Lions have finished 2nd in every season of the Air New Zealand Cup since its inception in 2006? And every year it has been won by a different team. Doesn't sound that bad? How about when we add that barring once, we've made the finals of the domestic series every year since that win in 2000?

In fact, it's been some very lean years for rugby and netball fans in the capital. I'm not suggesting we run out and start sacrificing lambs and kissing people's jewellery, but what I would suggest is that you follow my lead and support the Century City Saints, one of our most consistent national sports teams - except when it comes to updating their website, apparently. [the Wellington Firebirds are the other constant, but recent form doesn't suggest as much].

Now all we need to do is think up a story about how Christian Cullen's great-grandad once stole a horse which was tethered on IRB property and rode it across a netball court during a championship game and we can explain it all away...

RugbyBlips: vote it up!

I think a good examination of what we did directly after winning the first rugby world cup is needed.

Apropos of us not winning the World Cup, I though the last match we play against France before any World Cup may be a pointer:

  • Before the 2007 World Cup, ABs thrash France 61-10 on 9 June 2007 in Wellington; in the World Cup NZ is bailed out in quarter-final (by France).
  • Before the 2003 World Cup, ABs beat France 31-23 on 28 June 2003 in Christchurch; in the World Cup NZ is bailed out in semi-final (by Australia).
  • Before the 1999 World Cup, ABs thrash France 54-7 on 26 June 1999 at Wellington; in the World Cup NZ is bailed out in semi-final (by France).
  • Before 1995 World Cup, the ABs are stunned by the brilliant "try from the ends of the Earth", 20-23, on 3 July 1994 at Auckland; in the World Cup, a sick ABs team (there, I said it) lose in extra time in the final to the Rainbow Nation.
  • Before the 1991 World Cup, ABs thrash France 30-12 at Parc des Princes on 10 November 1990 at Parc des Princes; in the World Cup NZ is bailed out in semi-final (by Australia).
  • Before the 1987 World Cup, the ABs lose 3-16 (and Buck almost loses a nut) on 15 November 1986 at Nantes; however, NZ goes on to win the World Cup.

Dare I say it: maybe we should lose heavily to the French in our last match with them in the lead-up to 2011. (Although that match in 1994 is an obvious aberration in my theory. Hmmm...back to the drawing board.)

Their predecessors, the Shakers and the Flyers, who managed to have an even worse record. The Pulse seem to have morphed into an unofficial national under 21 team this year though, so maybe they'll do better.

That's an interesting-funny post. And I have to say that I really like Sideline Mike analysis LOL
