As promised in Episode 34, the lyrics to the two All Black rugby hakas (and video, so you can learn the actions too)...
Kapo o pango
(This haka was first performed by the All Blacks versus South Africa on 27 August 2005 at Carisbrook, Dunedin. The All Blacks won 31 - 27. This haka was written by Ngati Porou's Derek Lardelli. This haka will only be performed before special rugby test matches.)

I ahaha!
and I love how the aussie commentator's don't click to the fact that they've just seen a whole new haka performed for the first time (for an Australian team).

Thursday, 30 Nov 2006 — noizythe other thing is ... how accurate are these translations?
I can certainly match up the latter bits of both, but the first few lines don't quite match up for me.
anyone with better te reo than me wanna shed some light on the issue...?

Monday, 09 Jul 2007 — John Archer (not verified)Kapa o Pango is the same haka as the ABs used on their big "Invincibles" 1924 tour when they won all 32 games. Only a couple of words have been altered - like Kapa o pango substituted for Niu Tirini.
The meaning is closer to
Let me be one with the land!
Hi! Au-e, Hi!
New Zealand is rumbling here!
Au, Au, Au-e Ha!
The team in black is rumbling here!
Au, Au, Au-e Ha!
Fight with the fear
Fight with the terror
To the sky above
Fight up there,
high up there. Yeah!
Our shadows fall!
Team in Black!
Yeah!

Have been tot NZ 2 times and hope to come over again in a few years.
I lost my heart to this beautifull country and the people who live there.
I'am still a fan of the All Blacks. And am trying, without much succes, to learn the Haka!
What I have learned I show my kids (7 and 4), the are impressed, and think its great.
Actualy, it's doesn't look the real thing by far, but thats doens't bother them. :-)
Want to wish the All Blacks a good game and dito result against Australië.

I'd love to learn the haka to perform it with my friends but I get mixed up with the rythym and the phonetics. Can someone help me? Does someone know about a haka tutorial online?

i just have a short question, before starting the Ka Mate, the all black`s captain is saying something, like to make everybody ready for...what is it? thank you very much!
- reply
Friday, 27 Mar 2009 — Naly DHi, your English is fine. In answer to your question, according to Wikipedia, they say
Slap the hands against the thighs!
Puff out the chest!
Bend the knees!
Let the hip follow!
Stamp the feet as hard as you can!
This is the section in bold. And it's not neccessarily the captain ;)

My question is who do the All Blacks have the most respect for out of the polyneisian teams? Im from England and for some reason can never bring myself to watch them play rugby, instead i watch the All Blacks kicking butt from modern day games to past!
Keep the entertainment flowing and i seriously hope you win the next world cup!!! Aloha...

Monday, 09 Aug 2010 — TUMATAUENGA (not verified)Kia ora koutou" (Greetings all) Its humbling & heart warming to hear all of your feed back & experience's with in our MAORI TANGA!! re:(HAKA)...Me being maori make's me very proud of who i am, where im from, knowing my whakapapa (FAMILY TREE) & my tupuna. For me & my hapu (SUB TRIBE) & People, The word HAKA" runs very deep in our bloodlines. So deep it makes your blood boil, Your heartbeat race instantly & in some ways, You feel like the INCREDIBLE HULK while doing the HAKA" At times you can feel the wairua (SPIRITUAL PRESENCE) with in & around you no matter where you preform it. I am only going to share my personal experience & pass encounters with people from aotearoa & from around the world wanting a different view of the word HAKA!! 1st we never do the haka if your drinking alcohol!! (BIG NO NO). Respect the place where your thinking of preforming it. Think of the people where your preforming haka (RESPECT). Have pride doing the haka where ever you may go in the world & be very humble afterwards. Its not made to pick up chicks, its not made to make money, Its for identity, pride, power, & people of the land!! For me, The word HAKA" is POWER FULL...When we do the haka on the rugby field, Women & children must always stay behind the men at all times!! Its to protect the future of the iwi (TRIBE) & if it doe's get heavy, at least the men in the front surrounding the women & children will be protected & the full brunt of the challenge will be sorted amongst the men!! These sort of haka will only be seen at maori sports tournament around aotearoa. They also have these sports tournaments around the world. The captain does not always lead the haka, Its up to the team & individual with the most confident knowledge, competence & this often is shared with a few kaea (LEADERS) with in the roopu (GROUP). Depending on the roopu & styles of haka!! Most times the actions speak louder than words & it can be very intimidating. You may ask" why do they stomp there feet? This is the sound of our drum, It keeps our timing with in the haka & to make our mark on the land!! Why do they shake there fingers & hands? Its the heat burning up inside our bodies & exiting through our hands & fingers like flames on our hands trying to keep our cool till the next orders from the leader. Well people" i can go on & on all day but id thought id share a bit of light & different views on this matter to the world & i hope this has helped you in some way of understanding the pro's & cons of the word HAKA" Remember? This is only my views & pass experiences at maori rugby league & rugby tournaments with doing the haka!! Its buy far the best way to see HAKA" preformed at its best!! So, when ever you hear of a maori rugby league or rugby tournament? Make sure to go & watch the pre match haka preform before the games starts, Its a must see & you will never forget it, I promise you that!! Google maori rugby league haka & some should pop up? If anyone has any comments & questions? feel free to share? I don't know everything in the world, but willing to share my experience with people who resect our culture. Till next time i read this page" Be safe!! No reira koutou" Ko tarakeha te maunga" Ko moetangi te awa" Ko matihetihe te marae" Ko hato hemi te whare karakia" Ko hokianga te moana" Ko te one pu te kahakaharoa" Ko tinana te waka" Ko te rarawa te hapu" KO NGAPUHI NUI TONU TE IWI....Tiiii....Hei....MAURI ORA!!
